I’d echo what Sean says too: write regularly and traffic will gradually build before you start getting the emails or telephone calls – I’ve had invitations to speak at conferences or universities, as well as commissions for specialist PR/marketing and technology consulting as a direct consequence of blogging.

I would add that people shouldn’t focus on blog visitor numbers. It’s quality not quantity that counts. I’d rather my blog be visited by hundred people who are stimulated by what I write, than 100,000 who couldn’t care less.

I think the main tricks for success are writing on something that you enjoy talking about and can regularly write about and be patient. The traffic does come and then the phone calls and then the projects.
